From the Blue to the Green; Exploring the Hidden Gems of Barbados: Part 1

Beyond the Beaches: A Journey Into the Green

Barbados is known for its stunning beaches and vibrant culture, but there’s so much more to this island than meets the eye. On a recent trip to visit my best friend, I discovered the heart of Barbados through its hidden treasures—far from the usual tourist spots. What unfolded was an adventure filled with breathtaking landscapes, local encounters, and insights into the island’s efforts to tackle climate change.

The adventure began in a trusty old 1990s Jimny 4x4, with the soft top down and the warm Caribbean breeze in my hair. This wasn’t just a road trip; it was an exploration inspired by the government’s “From the Blue to the Green” initiative. The program encourages visitors to step away from the beaches and immerse themselves in the lush countryside and gullies that make up the island’s natural beauty.

Our first stop was Flower Cave, a stunning spot where waves crash against cliffs with mesmerizing power. The sound was deafening, yet captivating—a raw reminder of nature’s strength. Walking along the cliffs, we met Winston, a fisherman scaling his catch with bottle caps attached to a brush handle. His ingenuity and willingness to share his craft made for a memorable moment—and a perfect photo opportunity.

Abandoned Beauty: Exploring Forgotten Landmarks

Barbados isn’t just about its vibrant culture and scenic coastline; it also holds stories of decline. During our trip, we visited an abandoned hotel—a hauntingly beautiful reminder of economic struggles and climate challenges. While the disrepair was sobering, the site offered a unique backdrop for photography, blending the man-made with the overgrowth of nature reclaiming its space.

Another highlight was a visit to a lighthouse, standing tall as a sentinel overlooking the island. The juxtaposition of old landmarks and untouched natural beauty showcased the delicate balance Barbados maintains between preserving its heritage and adapting to modern challenges.

Facing Climate Challenges: The Fight for Resilience

Barbados is at the forefront of the battle against climate change. Rising sea levels, higher temperatures, and extreme weather events are putting immense pressure on the island. Despite bold initiatives like “Roofs to Reefs,” which aims to make Barbados more climate-resilient, the financial burden is enormous. With $2 billion needed for renewable energy and other sustainability projects, the path forward is daunting.

The Blue-Green Investment Corporation (BGIC) is stepping in to help. This innovative public-private partnership is working to fund green housing, renewable energy, water conservation, and more. By focusing on sustainable development, the BGIC aims to transform the Caribbean and positively impact over 200,000 lives.

What We Can Learn From Barbados

Barbados’ commitment to resilience is inspiring. Despite financial hurdles, the island is determined to create a sustainable future. Whether it’s through grassroots programs like “From the Blue to the Green” or large-scale investments by the BGIC, Barbados exemplifies the importance of collective action in addressing global challenges.
